<p>The stygobiont gastropods of Iran remain poorly studied. In the present paper, two new species of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Hydrobiidae">Hydrobiidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> are described from Tuveh seasonal spring, close to Tuveh village, Andimeshk, Khuzestan Province, Iran: one representing a new genus and the other a new species putatively assigned to the genus <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Pseudamnicola">Pseudamnicola</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>. The shell, soft part morphology, radula, female reproductive organs and penis are described. Phylogenetic analyses based on mitochondrial <abbrev xlink:title="cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI)">COI</abbrev>, nuclear histone <abbrev xlink:title="nuclear histone 3">H3</abbrev>, and ribosomal 28S genes place the new genus as a sister to a clade comprising the Balkan genus <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Montenegrospeum">Montenegrospeum</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Martensamnicola">Martensamnicola</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="hissarica">hissarica</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> from Tajikistan. Our literature survey revealed no records of Iranian truncatelloid snails inhabiting springs. Therefore, the few specimens of minute truncatelloid gastropods collected in Tuveh Spring, Iran, are noteworthy. The snails lacked both eyes and pigmentation in their soft parts, clearly indicating troglomorphic adaptations (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Culver 2012</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Culver and Pipan 2009</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">2014</xref>). Three cave fishes have been reported from this spring (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B93">Vatandoust et al. 2019</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B57">Malek-Hosseini et al. 2022</xref>), which had been described from a cave about 31 km to the north of Tuveh Spring. A stygobiotic isopod was recently described from a spring about 5 km to the east of Tuveh Spring (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B57">Malek-Hosseini et al. 2022</xref>). Overall, these data suggest the presence of a large aquifer that is feeding all these karstic springs in the area and hence, the putative presence of more stygobiotic animals in this aquifer is suggested.</p>

<p>After several sampling attempts, only a few empty shells were recovered from the remote type locality, a seasonal spring without any known cave in its aquifer. The species appears to be stygobiotic, as no live specimens were washed out even during periods of maximum water discharge in early spring.</p>
<p>Shell and aperture morphology indicate that the species likely inhabits a stygobiotic environment with low water-flow velocity, probably semi-stagnant cave pools, and is therefore unlikely to be adapted to cave rivers with strong currents. Consequently, living individuals are probably not easily transported to the surface through the spring outlet. This contrasts with the sympatric <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Iranobelgrandia">Iranobelgrandia</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="persica">persica</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> sp. nov., whose shell morphology suggests better adaptation to fast-flowing cave streams and rapids, according to the morphological categories proposed by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B42">Grego (2020)</xref>.</p>
<p>The distinctive shell morphology suggests that the species may represent a separate stygobiotic genus. <p>This study provided additional data on the subterranean fauna of Iran. <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Iranobelgrandia">Iranobelgrandia</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="persica">persica</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> sp. nov. represents the second stygobiotic gastropod species from Iranian groundwater confirmed by molecular data, whereas the third species, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Pseudamnicola">Pseudamnicola</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="stygopersica">stygopersica</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, is currently known only from a few empty shells. Further studies across a wider area of Iran, particularly in the karstic regions of the Zagros Mountains, are needed to improve our understanding of the country’s stygofauna. Such research will be essential for clarifying the phylogenetic relationships between Iranian subterranean fauna and other stygobiotic faunas worldwide, as well as for understanding the evolutionary history of the colonization of Iranian subterranean habitats by these organisms. Molecular trees clearly indicate close relationships between our newly described <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Iranobelgrandia">Iranobelgrandia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and three European genera: <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Belgrandia">Belgrandia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Dalmatinella">Dalmatinella</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Montenegrospeum">Montenegrospeum</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, as well as with <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Martensamnicola">Martensamnicola</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> from Tajikistan. The type locality of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Iranobelgrandia">Iranobelgrandia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> is situated far from both the type locality of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Martensamnicola">Martensamnicola</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and the Balkans. Moreover, there is no basis for closer morphological comparison with <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Martensamnicola">Martensamnicola</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>; therefore, broader taxonomic and phylogeographic conclusions would be unjustified.
