<p>A new earthworm species, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Drawida">Drawida</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="xinjiangensis">xinjiangensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>sp. nov., was described from the northwestern China using an integrative taxonomic approach that combined morphological examination and molecular data. The new species belongs to the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Drawida">Drawida</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="japonica">japonica</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> species complex (<abbrev xlink:title="Drawida japonica species complex">DjSC</abbrev>) and is distinguished from its congeners by its body length of 33–70 mm, clitellum in X–XIII (white laterally and dark brown medially), two to three gizzards, one pair of testis sacs suspended on septum 9/10 or 10/11, and cylindrical-shaped white prostate glands that are nearly as long as or longer than the testis sacs. Molecular species delimitation: Assemble Species by Automatic Partitioning (<abbrev xlink:title="Assemble Species by Automatic Partitioning">ASAP</abbrev>), Generalised Mixed Yule Coalescent (<abbrev xlink:title="Generalised Mixed Yule Coalescent">GMYC</abbrev>), and Bayesian Phylogenetics and Phylogeography (<abbrev xlink:title="Bayesian Phylogenetics and Phylogeography">BPP</abbrev>) consistently supported its species status assignment. Phylogenetic analyses based on the nuclear <abbrev xlink:title="nuclear 28S ribosomal RNA gene">28S</abbrev> rRNA gene and mitogenomic data revealed that <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Drawida">D.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="xinjiangensis">xinjiangensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>sp. nov. forms an independent lineage within the <abbrev xlink:title="Drawida japonica species complex">DjSC</abbrev>. This discovery extends the west distribution of moniligastrid species to the arid and semi-arid regions in East Asia and highlights the hidden diversity of earthworms in this under-surveyed area.</p>

<p>Earthworms, as macro-soil fauna, serve as keystone species and ecosystem engineers in terrestrial ecosystems (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B28">Kooch et al. 2025</xref>), yet their overall distribution pattern remains poorly understood, with baseline surveys in western regions and high-altitude areas (e.g., the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Xinjiang) remaining relatively limited (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Fu et al. 2022</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B62">Zhao et al. 2026</xref>). Spanning multiple climatic zones from cold temperate to tropical, China features diverse and complex topography, ranging from the eastern coastal plains to the western plateaus and mountains, which support a wide variety of soil and vegetation types that may harbour higher earthworm diversity. <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Drawida">Drawida</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="japonica">japonica</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> was previously reported from Xinjiang by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Huang et al. <title>Discussion</title>
<p>In this study, an integrative taxonomic approach combining morphological comparisons and molecular analyses was used to describe <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Drawida">D.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="xinjiangensis">xinjiangensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> sp. nov. from northwestern China. Morphologically, the new species differs from other members of the <abbrev xlink:title="Drawida japonica species complex">DjSC</abbrev> in body length, body colour, and the relative proportions of the ampulla to the atrium and the testis sacs to the prostate glands. Molecularly, it is supported as an independent species by genetic distances of 17.1%–21.2% from all other <abbrev xlink:title="Drawida japonica species complex">DjSC</abbrev> species—well above the 15% inter-specific threshold routinely applied in earthworm taxonomy (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">Dong et al. 2019</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Chang et al. 2024</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Han et al. 2024</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">2026</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B42">Qin et al. 2025</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B61">Zhao et al. 2025</xref>). This discovery expands the known species diversity of <abbrev xlink:title="Drawida japonica species complex">DjSC</abbrev>, meanwhile, extends the west distribution boundary of moniligastrids into the arid and semi-arid regions of northwestern China. For now, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Moniligastridae">Moniligastridae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> occurs in most regions of China except the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B55">Xu and Xiao 2011</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B48">Shen et al. 2018</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B35">Narayanan et al. 2024</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">Liu et al. 2025a</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B30">2025b</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B41">Qiao et al. 2026</xref>).</p>

However, we acknowledge that the assembly of AT-rich repetitive non-coding regions from short-read data is prone to errors due to sequencing bias and the difficulty in resolving repetitive structures (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">Aird et al. 2011</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Formenti et al. 2021</xref>). Therefore, we designated this region as “putative” and emphasized that its accurate sequence requires independent validation via Sanger or long-read sequencing in future studies. This mito-nuclear discordance may be explained by mitochondrial introgression following historical hybridization, incomplete lineage sorting of ancestral polymorphisms (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B47">Schmidt et al. 2006</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B32">Matsuda et al. 2014</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B38">Papakostas et al. 2016</xref>), or limited phylogenetic signal from the mitochondrial genome alone—a phenomenon increasingly documented in earthworms (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Giska et al. 2015</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B31">Martinsson and Erséus 2017</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">Dupont et al. 2022</xref>). The type locality, Shuanghe City (northern Tianshan foothills), is a typical oasis fed by glacial meltwater from the Bortala and Jinghe rivers, supplemented by urban water systems (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B52">Tian and Xu 2020</xref>). The Alataw Pass, a natural corridor linking China to Central Asia and Europe, supports humid riparian habitats west of the pass that may facilitate dispersal into Kazakhstan. Adjacent regions may also harbour additional undiscovered moniligastrid species, warranting further surveys. However, human-mediated introduction cannot be ruled out, as all known localities are anthropogenically modified (farmlands and urban green spaces), and earthworms are readily dispersed via agricultural activities. Future population genomic analyses of natural habitats adjacent to the collection sites will be required to distinguish natural dispersal from anthropogenic introduction.</p>
