<p>The Serra da Bodoquena is located in the southeastern part of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, in western Brazil, near the border with Paraguay (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F1">1</xref>). This region represents an intersection between the Cerrado and the Atlantic Forest, two well-known biodiversity hotspots in Brazil that are home to a variety of living and fossil species of Brazilian fauna and flora, many of which are endemic. Additionally, it is situated on the southwestern edge of the Pantanal. Serra da Bodoquena National Park (<abbrev xlink:title="Serra da Bodoquena National Park">SBNP</abbrev>) covers an area of 76,481 hectares, stretching 300 km in length and 20 to 50 km in width. The <abbrev xlink:title="Serra da Bodoquena National Park">SBNP</abbrev> is divided into two polygons: to the north, covering 27,793 ha, the region is bordered by the Salobra River and the Olaria Stream; to the south, covering 48,688 ha, the region is bordered by the Perdido, Formoso, and Prata Rivers. The average annual temperature ranges from 20 °C to 22 °C, and precipitation ranges from 1,000 to 2,000 mm, with the dry season occurring from May to September and the rainy season from October to April (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">Alvares et al. 2013</xref>). Both caves where the new species of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Otostigmus">Otostigmus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> was found within the <abbrev xlink:title="Serra da Bodoquena National Park">SBNP</abbrev>. The Dente de Cão Cave is 3 km long and 220 m deep (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Auler 2009</xref>). It is known for its anastomotic/ramiform pattern with different chambers connected by smaller passages and the absence of fluvial sediments, being an example of hypogenic karst (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Auler 2017</xref>). The Bacuri Cave is a smaller cave located about 3 km away from the Dente de Cão Cave in a straight line and has the same hypogenic pattern as the Dente de Cão Cave (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F2">2</xref>).</p>

It was discovered in the same cave where another troglomorphic centipede species was recently described (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Díaz-Sandoval et al. 2025</xref>). Together with additional troglobitic species currently being described from these caves, these findings highlight the exceptional biological significance of these subterranean environments and reinforce the urgent need for speleological heritage preservation in Brazil.</p>

      <title>Acknowledgments</title>
<p>This work was part of a long-term research project on biodiversity assessment studies in the Pantanal run by the Brazilian National Institute of Science and Technology of Wetlands (INAU/UFMT/CNPq/MCTIC). It was also supported by Instituto Brasileiro de Desenvolvimento e Sustentabilidade – IABS as part of the project provided for in the Speleological Compensation Commitment Term - TCCE ICMBio/Vale No. 01/2022. We are immensely grateful to the Laboratório de Citogenética e Genética Animal (LabGen) at the Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso (UFMT) for generously providing their facilities for the molecular analyses. We also are very grateful for the help of Juan Díaz Sandoval, who assisted us in extracting the genetic material.</p>

<p>table S1: Estimates of evolutionary divergence between sequences. The number of base substitutions per site between sequences is shown. Analyses were conducted using the Kimura 2-parameter model. The analytical procedure encompassed 49 coding nucleotide sequences using 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and non-coding positions. The pairwise deletion option was applied to all ambiguous positions for each sequence pair resulting in a final data set comprising 528 positions. Evolutionary analyses were conducted in MEGA12.</p>
