      <title>Introduction</title>
<p>From 2022 to 2025, faunal surveys were undertaken of the caves located in Great Basin National Park and Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, White Pine County, Nevada. The surveys yielded new records of the cave-limited species, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Nevadesmus">Nevadesmus</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ophimontis">ophimontis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> Shear, 2009 (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Macrosternodesmidae">Macrosternodesmidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>), and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Idagona">Idagona</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="lehmanensis">lehmanensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> Shear, 2007 (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Conotylidae">Conotylidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>), as well as the discovery of the new species <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Bollmanella">Bollmanella</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="amorensis">amorensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> sp. nov. (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Conotylidae">Conotylidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>) from the Labor of Love Cave. The new species is separated from other members of genus by more than 600 miles (ca. 965 km) and by intervening semidesert grassland inhospitable to millipedes. While limited to caves by non-suitable surrounding habitat, the three species are only somewhat morphologically adapted to life underground. We speculate that their presence in the caves is due to relatively recent climatic and ecotope changes associated with the retreat of the most recent glaciers some 14,000 to 12,000 years ago and aridification of the landscape.</p>
<p>The records from the surveys are given in Tables <xref ref-type="table" rid="T1">1</xref>, <xref ref-type="table" rid="T2">2</xref>. Because the studied caves are ecologically sensitive and are of paleontological, archaeological and ethnographic importance, we do not provide coordinates for them. All the caves are under the protection of the National Park Service or National Forest Service of the United States, and are in the Great Basin National Park or the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.</p>

<title>Ecological notes on Labor of Love Cave</title>
<p>Labor of Love Cave (Fig. 12) is located in the lower slopes of the Schell Creek Range along a low angle normal fault contact called the Schell Creek Range Detachment. The upper plate consists of Upper Cambrian and Lower and Middle Ordovician limestone, while the lower plate consists of Middle and Upper Cambrian Lincoln Peak Formation (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Great Basin Institute 2025</xref>). The vadose cave formed from surface water infiltrating along fractures to form a stream. The stream runs through most of the cave, then exits through a passage that is too small for humans. The karst resurgence resurfaces at Bastian Spring.</p>
<p>Current surface vegetation is typical of Great Basin Desert at about 2000 m elevation, with scattered sagebrush species (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Artemesia">Artemesia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> sp.) transitioning into single-leaf pinyon pine (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Pinus">Pinus</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="monophylla">monophylla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>) and Utah juniper (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Juniperus">Juniperus</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="osteosperma">osteosperma</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>), with various forbs and shrubs in the area.</p>
<p>The cave is entered via a manhole-style gate and steel enclosure installed in the 1980s. Then a tight, awkward crawl under highly unstable breakdown is encountered, before squeezing through a hole that was dug out by local cavers in 1981–1982 to reach the stream passage. The cave passage is then very linear, with most of it consisting of active stream passage that terminates in impassible breakdown and an upstream sump. Most of the cave is 3–5 m wide and 2–3 m high, and relatively muddy. The deposition of abundant stream sediments suggest that this cave is a relict of a wetter Pleistocene climate. Numerous delicate and active speleothems are found throughout the cave, some just a meter above the current stream, indicating a lack of high-energy flooding (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Great Basin Institute 2025</xref>).</p>
<p>Labor of Love Cave is most well known as a paleontological site with late Pleistocene fossils. One of the most notable fossils is a nearly complete specimen of the short-faced bear, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Arctodus">Arctodus</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="simus">simus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, of which a copy of the skeleton is shown at the White Pine Public Museum in Ely, Nevada. Several of these animals are now extinct, and others are extant. These animals would have entered the cave before the entrance collapsed, which then restricted access and preserved their remains.</p>
<p>Labor of Love is also a biologically significant cave with numerous invertebrate species (Table <xref ref-type="table" rid="T2">2</xref>). The fauna includes the two millipede species discussed above and a possible new species of flatworm and cave-adapted dipluran (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Gilleland 2012</xref>). Abundant roots within the cave’s stream passage provide an influx of nutrients to support the biodiversity. Based on limited measurements, it appears that the average cave air temperature is about 10–12 °C (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Emslie and Mead 2020</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Great Basin Institute 2025</xref>). The water temperature and levels are unknown year-round, but the cave is known to be sumped so that no entrance is possible during the spring and high-water years.</p>

Currently we are aware of many new and unexplored caves, and new species of millipedes and other cave animals from them await discovery and documentation.</p>
<p>The Wild Caves Project is uncovering new species and fascinating discoveries of natural heritage every year. This project is part of the Protecting Wild Caves in White Pine County Project, funded by the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act (<abbrev xlink:title="Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act">SNPLMA</abbrev>). This interagency project is managed by Great Basin National Park (<named-content content-type="dwc:institutional_code" xlink:title="Great Basin National Park" xlink:href="https://scientific-collections.gbif.org/institution/88c05792-fb18-46d5-bfcf-905379ed9ba7">GRBA</named-content>) and Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest (<named-content content-type="dwc:collectionCode" xlink:title="Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest Herbarium (Headquarters)" xlink:href="https://scientific-collections.gbif.org/collection/d90abf78-ebe1-4345-8d4a-e5f142e6004f">HTNF</named-content>). The overall study has multiple components including an ethnographic assessment and report, cave rock art protection, education and outreach, and a Wild Caves Inventory, which produced the information covered in this paper.</p>
<p>Over two years, June 2022–October 2023, a team of experts conducted detailed scientific inventories of paleontological, archeological, biological, hydrological, and geologic resources in 30 <named-content content-type="dwc:institutional_code" xlink:title="Great Basin National Park" xlink:href="https://scientific-collections.gbif.org/institution/88c05792-fb18-46d5-bfcf-905379ed9ba7">GRBA</named-content> caves and 15 <named-content content-type="dwc:collectionCode" xlink:title="Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest Herbarium (Headquarters)" xlink:href="https://scientific-collections.gbif.org/collection/d90abf78-ebe1-4345-8d4a-e5f142e6004f">HTNF</named-content> caves. The field portion of the project also included cave cartography, photography, and rescue assessments. Extensive reports (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Great Basin Institute 2025</xref>) were written with recommendations for future work, including additional site visits, which occur sporadically.</p>
<p>White Pine County, Nevada, is located in the middle of the Great Basin hydrologic region as well as the Basin and Range geologic province. Primary mountain ranges within the county are the Snake, Schell Creek, and Egan Ranges, each over 80 km long and separated from each other by basins that are typically 20–40 km wide. The Snake Range contains the second highest peak in the state, Wheeler Peak, at 3982 m. The mountain ranges are of a complex geology, primarily consisting of Cambrian-age carbonate rocks that have experienced multiple deformational events (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Hose et al. 2024</xref>).</p>
<p>The caves in White Pine County are numerous and varied, with elevations from about 2000 to 3400 m. Caves at the lower elevations are typically found in big sagebrush steppe that transitions to pinyon-juniper woodland. Caves at middle elevations are found in mixed conifer woodlands, with Douglas fir (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Pseudotsuga">Pseudotsuga</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="menziesii">menziesii</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>), white fir (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Abies">Abies</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="concolor">concolor</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>), and limber pine (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Pinus">Pinus</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="flexilis">flexilis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>) dominant. While the majority of caves have formed hypogenically, others, like Labor of Love, are epigenic caves, while some are fracture and talus caves (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Hose et al. 2024</xref>).</p>

<p>Millipedes are found in some of the White Pine County caves. <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Nevadesmus">Nevadesmus</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="ophimontis">ophimontis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> has been found in Lehman, Model, and Snake Creek Caves, but not other nearby caves. <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Idagona">Idagona</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="lehmanensis">lehmanensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> is much more widespread. It has been found in several caves in the Baker Creek area (Model, Halliday’s Deep, and Lower Pictograph Caves); and Water Trough Cave and Drumming Cave, which have springs running through them; this species has also been found in high-elevation caves (Cave 24, Pinecone, Monument, and Broken), and appears to show a strong affinity for water and/or high elevations. Finally, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Bollmanella">Bollmanella</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="amorensis">amorensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> sp. nov., is currently known from just one cave in White Pine County.</p>
<p><xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Shear, Richart and Wong (2020)</xref> speculated that the occurrence in caves of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Complicatella">Complicatella</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="neili">neili</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> was relatively recent and perhaps dated to some 14,000 years ago when the retreat of the continental glacier resulted in the extensive drying of the area—including the disappearance of a large glacial lake in which the Humboldt Range was an island. The immediate surroundings of the cave in which <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Complicatella">C.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="neili">neili</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> dwells are not forested, but stunted trees and low bushes predominate on the otherwise barren limestone peak. Possibly as the climate dried, forests at higher and sequentially higher elevations became extinct and along with them species of soil and litter animals. The only populations of such animals that could survive were those inhabiting caves, where moist conditions remained. The same model of the restriction of once wide ranges of surface-dwelling populations can be invoked for the species from west central Nevada we discuss here. <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Complicatella">Complicatella</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="neili">neili</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Bollmanella">Bollmanella</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="amorensis">amorensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> sp. nov. and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Idagona">Idagona</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="lehmanensis">lehmanensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> do not show striking troglobitic adaptation, and the latter two species have numbers of ommatidia similar to those of surface dwelling conotylids in the same size range. This suggests their occupancy of caves is not of long standing. The surroundings of the caves studied in the survey would be, or has become in the last 14,000 years, inhospitable for millipedes, leaving those able to invade and survive in caves as relicts of a past climate.</p>
<p>If so, this history would suggest that the Great Basin once supported a millipede fauna with affinities to the present fauna of the Pacific Northwest. The drying climate probably led to the natural extirpation of most of this fauna, leaving behind only populations that had become established in caves. This is not the place for further detailed speculation but it may be noted that some caves in the upper and middle Mississippi valley are inhabited by millipede species with far western affinities.</p>
