<p>The biodiversity of two caves in the Bavarian Alps, one at low altitude (Angerlloch) and the other at high altitude (Schrecksattel Ice Cave), was studied, with particular attention paid to the relative abundance of trogloxene, troglophile, and troglobitic species. Two excursions were organised for each cave to collect specimens and set pitfall traps for three months. A total of 32 species were identified in the Angerlloch and 16 in the Schrecksattel Ice Cave. Greater total biodiversity was observed in Angerlloch, but most of this fauna consisted of non-troglomorphic trogloxene species. In the Schrecksattel Ice Cave, only 16 species were found, but some of these were more highly adapted to life underground. Our results indicate that the low-altitude cave attracts a greater diversity of species with a low degree of cave adaptation, whereas the high-altitude cave harbours fewer species overall but has a more specialised troglobitic fauna. The results and species lists are presented herein. Furthermore, the occurrence of the springtail <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Protaphorura">Protaphorura</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="septempapillata">septempapillata</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (Palissa, 1986) was documented for the first time in the Schrecksattel Ice Cave, representing the second cave record for this species beyond its type locality.</p>

      <title>Introduction</title>
<p>Caves in temperate regions are extreme environments characterised by total darkness, relatively stable temperatures with little seasonal variation, very high relative humidity, and a shortage of food due to the absence of primary producers (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Sket 2008</xref>). Despite seemingly harsh conditions, caves worldwide are inhabited by diverse, highly specialised organisms adapted to subterranean life, known as troglobites, many of which are endemic to individual cave systems (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">Li et al. 2022</xref>). High endemism in subterranean fauna is linked to the isolation and fragmentation of karst systems which restricts dispersal and promotes diversification. Combined with limited accessibility, cave fauna remains poorly studied, and many taxa are still undescribed, including those in the Western Palearctic (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B25">Zacharda 2000</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Faille et al. 2015</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Cruz-Lopez et al. 2016</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">Vargovitsh 2019</xref>). Angerlloch and Schrecksattel Ice Cave are karstic caves. Karstic caves in the northern Alps are mainly composed of limestone that has been partially dissolved by underground water systems (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Wisshak et al. 2013</xref>). The caves in the study area are composed of limestone equivalent to that of the Dachstein Formation in Austria, with a high concentration of calcium carbonate (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Wisshak et al. 2013</xref>). Most of the karstification of the Alps probably occurred during the Oligocene and Miocene (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Christian and Spötl 2010</xref>), when the Alps had much lower relief than today and were covered by dense tropical and subtropical forests. Under these conditions, caves formed close to the groundwater table, while higher rainfall and elevated soil carbon content promoted acidic water, which accelerated rock dissolution and intensified karstification (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B23">Williams 2004</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Christian and Spötl 2010</xref>).</p>
<p>Cave fauna is generally divided into three ecological categories: trogloxenes, which only enter caves sporadically and do not reproduce there; troglophiles, which are species that live on the surface but are closely dependent on caves, where they can reproduce; and troglobites, which spend their entire life cycle underground and are entirely specialized for underground life (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Racovitza 1907</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Sket 2008</xref>). The vast majority of troglobites are highly endemic and share convergent morphological adaptations, such as loss of pigmentation and blindness (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Latella and Stoch 2002</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Sket 2008</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Marx and Weber 2015</xref>).</p>
<p>This study aimed to investigate the biodiversity of two caves located at different altitudes in the Bavarian Alps, with a particular focus on the relative presence of trogloxenes, troglophiles, and troglobitic species. Even though the caves are more than 100 km apart, a distance that can already lead to significant differences in faunal composition in cave systems, we provide a first overview of the differences in species assemblages and insight into possible altitudinal patterns in cave fauna and troglomorphic specialisation.</p>

<p>The Angerlloch (<named-content content-type="dwc:verbatimCoordinates">47°33'36.4"N, 011°17'12.9"E</named-content>) is a relatively small karst cave located in the northern part of the Bavarian Alps, south of Walchensee, near the village of Obernach, at an altitude of approximately 942 m (a.s.l). The cave features seasonally flooded pools and passages, lower areas covered with sediment, an upper fossil network, and walls rich in troglophilic fauna. Its entrance is located in a steep, humid mountain forest, where a nearby stream originates but remains unconnected to the cave’s hydrographic network. Angerlloch is known to be a winter refuge for bats (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Meining et al. 2009</xref>). On 9 October 2019 the temperature in the lower part of the cave was approximately 5.5 °C, and approximately 8.8 °C in the upper part.</p>
<p>The Schrecksattel Ice Cave (<named-content content-type="dwc:verbatimCoordinates">47°38'30.0"N, 012°47'57.3"E</named-content>) is located near Bad Reichenhall, south of the village of Oberjettenberg, at an altitude of approximately 1,545 m (a.s.l). It is a karst cave located in the Schrecksattel massif and is known for its seasonal but persistent ice deposits. The study focused on the “old” part, an 80 m long sloping limestone corridor composed of rocks, clay, gravel, and permanent ice sheets, located above a coniferous forest and surrounded by grasses, mosses, and dwarf shrubs. On 10 October 2019, the temperature at the entrance was around 2.3 °C, gradually decreasing to 0.2 °C at the deepest point of the cave.</p>
<p>The Angerlloch and Schrecksattel caves were chosen for their easy access, low human disturbance, and proximity to the Bavarian Alps. The location of the Schrecksattel Ice Cave, close to Austrian caves known to harbour troglobitic fauna, increases the chances of finding related species (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Christian and Spötl 2010</xref>). The main difference between the two targeted cavities is their altitude, 942 m for Angerlloch (mountain forest of beech and spruce) and 1545 m for Schrecksattel (subalpine spruce, shrubs and grasslands), which places them in different climatic and vegetation zones (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">Forster 2016</xref>).</p>

        <title>Sample collection</title>
<p>Both caves were visited twice, once in early July (9/10 July 2019) and again in early October (9/10 October 2019). This double visit was necessary for two reasons: first, to collect a representative number of specimens, and second, because the first visit took place in summer and the second at the beginning of the cold period. Invertebrates were collected from the cave entrances. Small species were collected using exhausters, and larger species were collected directly into vials. The specimens were then transferred to 96% ethanol. In July, pitfall traps filled with saline solution were randomly placed in the caves (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F1">1</xref>). Bait (cheese, sausage, moss, and dead wood) was placed on the ground around the trap openings. The traps were covered with stones to conceal them, while leaving the opening accessible. Four traps were placed inside the Angerlloch cave, two in the lower part and two in the upper gallery (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F1">1</xref>). Five traps were placed inside the Schrecksattel Ice Cave (Figs <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F2">2</xref>, <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3">3A</xref>).</p>

<p>To protect bat populations and limit disturbances, the two entrances to Angerlloch are closed with metal gates between October 1st and May 1st. Despite this unexpected setback, we were able to collect specimens at the entrance and a few meters inside the cave (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F1">1</xref>). The deep area had already been sampled during our first visit. A total of 32 different species were identified from the samples collected in the Angerlloch, including ten troglophiles and 18 trogloxenous species; however, we did not find any troglobites (Table <xref ref-type="table" rid="T1">1</xref>).</p>

<p>Species diversity around cave entrances strongly influences the likelihood of accidental cave entry, as shown by the species numbers at the two sites studied. Angerlloch is surrounded by dense, species-rich forests, yielding greater nearby invertebrate diversity (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Nagy et al. 2003</xref>). In contrast, the area around Schrecksattel has sparse subalpine vegetation, consisting mainly of mosses, lichens, grasses, dwarf shrubs, and scattered stunted trees, which are nutrient-poor and cannot support large invertebrate populations (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Nagy et al. 2003</xref>). Consequently, fewer species can survive under harsher conditions than in the temperate forest surrounding Angerlloch. Most trogloxene species are represented by one or a few individuals, indicating accidental occurrence (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Sket 2008</xref>). Apart from altitude, the main difference between Angerlloch and Schrecksattel in accessibility lies in entrance shape and position. Angerlloch’s wider, lower entrance, with soil and leaf litter extending into the cave, facilitates the entry of terrestrial fauna, whereas Schrecksattel’s narrow, elevated entrance reduces access for ground-dwelling species and flying insects (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Throne et al. 1984</xref>; Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F5">5</xref>; Tables <xref ref-type="table" rid="T1">1</xref>, <xref ref-type="table" rid="T2">2</xref>).</p>

        <title>Troglophiles</title>
<p>Explaining the presence of troglophilic fauna in a cave is challenging, as these species are neither completely dependent on nor completely independent of underground habitats. Therefore, their occurrence depends on the ecology of each species. For example, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Amilenus">Amilenus</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="aurantiacus">aurantiacus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="order" reg="Opiliones">Opiliones</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>) uses caves for moulting and hibernating during winter, explaining its absence in Angerlloch in July (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Mainz 1978</xref>). In contrast, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Triphosa">Triphosa</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="dubitata">dubitata</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="order" reg="Lepidoptera">Lepidoptera</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>) uses caves throughout the year as resting sites, whereas Meta menardi (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="order" reg="Araneae">Araneae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>) spends most of its life inside caves, although juveniles disperse outside (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">Bartsch et al. 2001</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Mammola and Isaia 2019</xref>). These differences explain the presence of troglophilic species in both caves despite their contrasting environmental conditions.</p>

        <title>Troglobites</title>
<p>Resource-rich caves generally harbour more diverse communities dominated by troglophiles and trogloxenes, whereas troglobionts are more likely to persist in isolated resource-poor habitats (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Latella and Stoch 2002</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Sket and Culver 2004</xref>). This may explain the absence of troglobites in Angerlloch, where the entrance zone is dominated by troglophiles and trogloxenes. In contrast, the Schrecksattel Ice Cave contained three troglobitic species, including the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="class" reg="Collembola">Collembola</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Protaphorura">Protaphorura</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="septempapillata">septempapillata</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>. The isolated high-altitude location, colder climate, and dry surrounding subalpine habitat probably reduce gene flow with surface populations and favour the persistence of specialised cave fauna (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Latella and Stoch 2002</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Christiansen 2004</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Sket 2008</xref>). The occurrence of several troglobitic taxa in the Schrecksattel Ice Cave is consistent with previous studies, suggesting that alpine karst systems acted as important refugia during past climatic fluctuations, allowing specialised subterranean fauna to persist in the Northern Calcareous Alps (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Christian 2002</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Christian and Spötl 2010</xref>).</p>

      <title>Conclusion</title>
<p>This study provides the first comparison of the subterranean fauna of Angerlloch and Schrecksattel, two Alpine cave environments with contrasting ecological conditions. Angerlloch showed higher species richness, with fauna mainly composed of trogloxenic and troglophilic species, reflecting its forested surroundings and stronger connection with surface habitats (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Nagy et al. 2003</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Sket 2008</xref>). In contrast, the Schrecksattel Ice Cave contained fewer species but a higher proportion of cave-adapted taxa, including three troglobitic species and the remarkable record of the springtail <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Protaphorura">Protaphorura</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="septempapillata">septempapillata</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, which extended the known distribution of this species beyond its type locality (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Palissa 1986</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Parimuchová and Kováč 2016</xref>). The contrasting faunal compositions of the two caves suggest that environmental conditions associated with altitude, isolation, and resource availability may influence subterranean communities in the Northern Limestone Alps.</p>
<p>While lower-altitude forest caves, such as Angerlloch, can support a richer fauna dominated by species with frequent surface interactions, high-altitude ice caves, such as the Schrecksattel Ice Cave, may provide suitable conditions for the persistence of specialised cave fauna (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Latella and Stoch 2002</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Sket and Culver 2004</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Sket 2008</xref>). The occurrence of several troglobitic taxa in the Schrecksattel Ice Cave is consistent with previous studies, suggesting that alpine karst systems acted as refugia during past climatic fluctuations, allowing specialised subterranean lineages to persist (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Christian 2002</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Christian and Spötl 2010</xref>). Further studies in additional alpine caves are required to determine whether this pattern represents a broader trend across the Alpine biogeographical region.</p>
